Mugavero Family Photo Session in Kirkwood
I had so much fun photographing the Mugavero family at home recently on a late summer evening. Nothing says summer to me quite like the joy of trampolines and the excitement of water balloon fights! These classic activities bring back so many fond memories of laughter and carefree days in the warmth of an Atlanta summer. Each jump on the trampoline seems to defy gravity, while every splash from a water balloon bursting adds color to the summer vibes.
As a family photographer I hope to tell the story of a family in this moment, and I do that through mostly documentary family photography—meaning I just tag along like a fly on the wall while our time together unfolds. I don’t give any directions, and I don’t pose families, and I don’t retouch photos—every mosquito bite tells a story :) I’m looking to make art out of the real life that I see in front of me, and to show the beauty in everyday moments through candid family photography.
Our homes are where so many of our memories are being made, so it is always my favorite photoshoot location. It is unique to that family, and it’s where everyone will naturally feel the most comfortable.
And I totally understand that most people don’t enjoy being photographed. I can’t stand it! So in order for families to relax in front of me, I suggest thinking of an activity or two to do during our time together. Activities can include anything that your family is into right now, or that would be fun time spent together.
I usually start my photo sessions with a few portraits, and we got a few nice portraits of the Mugaveros together in front of their house. I think portraits are nice and important in their own way, it’s just not my main goal. Once I’ve gotten some nice ones in a couple of different combos, I tell everyone to ignore me and have fun. That’s how we ended up with an epic water balloon fight in the yard :)
