Pope Newborn Photography at Home in North Decatur

Atlanta Newborn Photography At Home

I absolutely cherish the precious moments captured during my newborn session with the Pope family as they celebrated the arrival of their darling baby boy. Welcoming a newborn into the family is such a huge transition, and such a sweet time of life. It goes by so quickly, and it’s one of my favorite family moments to photograph in a documentary way. Documentary family photography is able to tell a fuller story than some other styles of photography that involve posing, and I think it’s simple authenticity is perfect for newborn sessions.

Documentary family photography sessions are also great because they’re laid back, and in the comfort of your own home. There is no need to try to get everyone “ready” and out the door, it’s just time spent hanging out at home together while I’m there making mostly candid photos. Everyday life with a newborn is like nothing else, especially when older siblings are involved. Newborn photography at home is the most natural way to preserve your family’s story.

The Pope family made the jump from three to four when their baby boy arrived. I had the honor of photographing them a few years back when I was their daughter’s newborn photographer, and now to see their daughter as a bubbly preschooler and big sister was tons of fun!

I met them at home in North Decatur, and after some yummy doughnuts (and their giant dog stealing one off the counter!), we spent some time in the nursery before heading to their backyard. There was a super sweet moment on the picnic blanket when big sister shared her toys with her little brother ♥️

Newborn photography is of course about the family’s newest member, but it’s also about the family that is adjusting. When older siblings are in the family I am very conscious of paying attention to them while I am there. First of all, I do not want to add to any feelings of jealousy, but secondly I find the transition of becoming a big brother or sister fascinating. Depending on the child (and their interest in the new baby), I might even start a newborn session by hanging out with the older sibling and then shift to also including the newborn baby. One of the benefits of longer sessions is the ability to not rush, and just go wherever our time together takes us.

The Popes were in the process of building their forever home nearby, and I just love the thought that the photography I’ve made for them over the years will be a timeless keepsake. I’ve been able to preserve memories from the early stages of their family's journey within their first home with natural family photos.

Real life is the best, and there’s just no need to style or pose. A family and their newborn are perfect just as they are, and documentary newborn photography highlights this. Having a baby is a huge transition, and a relaxed newborn photoshoot at home is easy and stress free.
