Atlanta Family Yearbook | A Year in the Life | Fall 2022
Documentary family photography means unposed candid family photography of real life. Portraits are important too, but documentary photos preserve your memories in a special way. A real way, that transports you back to this precious moment your family is in right now.
7 Things I Love and Look For at Family Photo Sessions
My style of family photography is mostly documentary family photography, meaning completely unposed, authentic, fly on the wall photographs of real connections, personalities and everyday life. I say mostly because I think family portraits are important to take occasionally, and I try to give a few good ones to every family I work with.
The Meehan Newborn Photography Session at Candler Park
I recently had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful family of four at Candler Park. To be honest, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from the session, especially given that it was my first outdoor newborn shoot. One of the elements of newborn photography that I love the most is capturing the essence of the home each family has created. Whether a home is full of chaos or calm, it is an integral part of a family's story, reflecting their unique rhythm and life.
Porch Portraits | A Portrait of Kirkwood
When the shelter in place order took effect back in March, life as we knew it stopped. Family photo sessions on my calendar got postponed indefinitely and I found myself home, rotating between home projects, reading the news, and trying to help my kids navigate learning through the computer.
Penny’s 1st Birthday | A Korean Dol in Atlanta
I was so honored to photograph Penny's 1st birthday party last week. It was my first Korean Dol, and it was lovely. Of course when I was first contacted to photograph the event I jumped on Wikipedia, which explained:
Dol (doljanchi, or tol) is probably one of the best-known of the Korean birthday celebrations. Dol is celebrated for the first birthday of a child. When Korea had little medicinal knowledge, many newborns would die from childhood diseases or because of Korea’s seasonal temperature differences. When a child lived to be a year old during that period, it was a very joyous occasion.
Olin’s Newborn Photo Session at Home in Decatur
I photographed this sweet little baby when he was two weeks old, and I can't believe that it has already been two months since he joined us. He already looks so different than he did at first, which is why I love to capture newborns in the first couple of weeks. I think that there is a sweet spot for newborn photos--I like to wait for them to "wake up" a little, but not so long that they no longer look like newborns. I find that to be around two-three weeks old.
Rogers Family Videography Session + Family Film in Edgewood
I recently had a summer photo and video session with this really cool family, who is dear to my heart. I was honored to witness the birth of their youngest, who turned one year old that weekend. I love working with this family--their girls are hilarious, the baby is adorable, and the overall feeling of love is simply gorgeous.
Johnson Family Photo Session in Collier Hills
I recently photographed this awesome family at a park in Collier Hills. I have been their family photographer for a few years now, and it's been great watching their family grow! Their newest family member is a few of months old, and oh so patient with his sweet big sisters!
Jackson at 1 Family Video Session at Home in Atlanta
Sweet Jackson turned one year old last month, and I had so much fun creating a family film to celebrate the occasion! I arrived before he woke up from his nap, and I absolutely adore his reaction to us walking into his room when he woke up!
Libby Family Photo Session in Piedmont Park
I photographed this super cool family on a Sunday afternoon in Piedmont Park recently. It was a cloudy, wintry day--which was great because it made for some moody family photographs that I love!
Thoele Family Photo Session in Avondale
Most of the leaves have fallen in Atlanta, the cold has arrived, and the busy fall family photo season is coming to an end. It was a fun one, for sure, with too many awesome families to do a blog post on every single one. But the Thoele family's session was one of my favorites. A great example of documentary family photography, as I didn’t direct or pose them, but instead I simply hung out with them as they went for a walk around the neighborhood, and I made pictures out of their personalities and connections.
Atlanta Birth Center is Now Open!
What an honor to attend the very first birth at the very first birth center in Atlanta! So many people have been working on opening a birth center for many years, so it was a little surreal to actually be there last week. I was honored to be asked to photograph the first birth center birth, and to be part of such an amazing group of women who believe that birth is normal.
